We walked up to the large iron gate to enter the tour, but, as we approached, the guard on the other side of the fence looked through the bars at us and swung the gate shut. We registered for a tour one week in advance and showed up promptly at 08:00 on Thursday, Mafor the tour. I grew up in Littleton and we were visiting family on our visit, but we were staying at a nice hotel in downtown Denver, walking distance to the mint. I was on a working vacation last week with my wife and kids (10 and 5) from Salt Lake City. The US Mint in Denver has tour offerings run by apathetic people who discourage tourists from visiting. Don't feel bad if you missed the tour, whereas there are a tons of much better things to do in Coloraado. They are suppose to add another wing in the future for viewing. Overall, not the greatest tour, and definately not worth waiting in line for. I really dont think thay terrorists care about pennies and nickels. This facility only manufactures coins, not paper money. They have all this security, including the strict guards, but I say, for what. The most you can see while on the upper level balcony is a machine shop floor spitting out pennies and the rep giving you history information on the coins. It was boring and I thought that it was going to be a bit more informative. The tour is about 30 minutes and not worth it. I was disapointed, however, a family allowed us to tag along with them since some of there party members never showed up. They all told me that they registered long ago and that there was a month long wait. We learned that when we showed up at the iron gate and other people in line were holding printouts of their registration forms. Little did we know that the US Mint tour required advanced registration.
